At first I tried mage only, but felt that I didn't have enough dps so I brought some range. I used fire wave with tome and a 3 item range switch. He's always way closer than he appears.All this is to say, the most important thing about learning Zulrah is to not get discouraged. This is a difficult and punishing boss to learn, especially if you're doing it without access to a trident or other important pieces of gear.
