The 383 does have a ton of tq, and doesn't need to rev to hit good HP numbers. I believe that since you don't plan on driving this a lot, that you should consider the 454. The SBC 400 has a much larger BBC sized bore of 4.125" so it is bigger and better than the smaller bore motor (it has a bigger crank journal as well as being designed from the ground up for a 3.75" stroke).A 355 of your liking will need deeper gears and a higher stall and should run low 12's in a chevelle. 4:10's and higher will be needed. A 3000 stall limits the car. A 4000 to 5000 stall would be needed to get the most out a car. Old parts and combos can be faster than they were when they were made.
